Mahmuda’s Fight Against the Flood – A Call for Support
Mahmuda, a courageous mother from the flood-prone district of Sunamganj, has been a resident of Sreepur Village for the past three years. Her journey is one of pain, perseverance, and hope.
Before arriving at Sreepur Village, Mahmuda’s life was marked by relentless hardship. Each year, devastating floods would ravage her village, destroying her home and leaving her family in despair. As if nature’s blows weren’t enough, Mahmuda also endured severe abuse from her drug-addicted husband, who failed to provide even the most basic needs for her and their two young children—aged just 6 and 3.
Left with no choice, Mahmuda fled her unsafe and unstable home in search of safety and support. She found both at Sreepur Village, a home for marginalised women and their children. At Sreepur Village, Mahmuda received not just shelter, but a new chance at life.
Over the past three years, she has undergone extensive training in tailoring, goat and duck rearing, and agriculture—all vital income-generating skills. With each passing day, Mahmuda has grown increasingly confident in her ability to support herself and her children upon her return to her community.
Yet, despite her determination and hard work, one fear continues to haunt her: the flood.
Mahmuda comes from an area where flooding is not an occasional disaster—it is an annual certainty. She knows that without a safe and flood-resistant home, all she has worked for could be washed away. Her future, and that of her children, remains vulnerable to the very threat that drove her to Sreepur Village.
