A Legacy of Three Generations: Janette Porter’s Journey with Sreepur Village
When Janette Porter became Chair of Sreepur Village in 2022, she was stepping into a role that felt like coming home. Her connection to the mothers and children we support in Bangladesh stretches back more than three decades, woven into the fabric of her family’s history.
“Sreepur has been part of my life since 1990 through my mother Ruby Porter MBE, a former trustee,” Janette explains. “The mothers and their children have and are part of our lives.”
Ruby Porter’s dedication to Sreepur Village left an indelible mark, not just on the organisation, but on her daughter. Growing up watching her mother’s commitment to supporting vulnerable women and children half a world away shaped Janette’s own values and priorities.
“My family’s commitment to Sreepur spans three generations. Sreepur isn’t just a project, it’s our life.”
For the past 11 years, Janette has served as a trustee, bringing her energy, expertise and deep personal investment to the board. As Chair, she works closely with our UK trustees and staff to ensure that every decision, every strategy, every pound raised serves one fundamental purpose: supporting women’s independence in Bangladesh.
“Being Chair of Sreepur Village is an incredible privilege,” she reflects. “Working with the UK board of trustees and our staff to support the mothers and children at Sreepur is key to supporting women’s independence in Bangladesh.”
For Janette, the work is about more than immediate help. It’s about changing what’s possible for future generations.
“Generational change, positive attitudes and hard work to enable women’s empowerment is key to our work. Education and skills training are all key objectives. Generations in Liverpool supporting generations in Bangladesh.”
That vision drives everything we do at Sreepur Village. Because of supporters like Janette and her family, mothers who arrive at our gates with nothing leave equipped with skills, confidence and a path to independence. Their children grow up with education, healthcare and hope.
Three generations of one Liverpool family, supporting countless generations of women and children in Bangladesh. That’s the power of sustained commitment. That’s the legacy being built, one mother, one child, one opportunity at a time.
