SwimSafe 2026 Launches

Sreepur Village is delighted to announce that SwimSafe is off and running for 2026. The programme is teaching our children essential swimming, rescue and water safety skills, giving them tools that could one day save their own life or the life of a friend.

Drowning is one of the most serious and least talked about threats facing children in Bangladesh. Around 9,600 people die from drowning in the country every year, and for children aged 1 to 4 it is the leading cause of death. Almost a quarter of all drowning deaths involve children under 5, and most happen within 20 metres of home, in ponds, ditches and water containers close to where children play. Globally, drowning remains among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5 to 14.

At Sreepur Village, many of our children live and play close to water every day, so learning to swim safely is not a luxury, it is a genuine safeguard. Through SwimSafe, children are taught how to float, swim to safety, and help others in difficulty, alongside broader water safety awareness.

This work also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3, Good Health and Wellbeing, which includes ending preventable deaths of children under 5, and SDG 4, Quality Education, since survival swimming is itself a form of life saving education.
