Throwback Thursday: BBC Spotlight on Sreepur Village (2009)

Looking back to 2009, when Sreepur Village was providing crucial support to single mothers and their children in rural Bangladesh, the BBC website featured our work in highlighting the unique approach we take to keeping families together. At that time, Pat Kerr and her British Airways colleagues had already been working for 20 years since founding the village in 1989, demonstrating that poverty should not separate children from their mothers. The BBC article captured the essence of what made Sreepur Village special - being the only charity in Bangladesh to keep destitute children together with their mothers whilst providing comprehensive support including housing, healthcare, education, and vocational training. This media attention helped showcase our holistic residential approach, where families could live on-site for up to three years whilst mothers gained the skills and confidence needed to rebuild their lives independently. Today, more than 15 years later, we continue this vital work, having supported over 8,000 single mothers and children since 1989, proving that the model the BBC highlighted all those years ago remains as relevant and impactful as ever.
