Rain Without Fear at Sreepur Village

Every monsoon, families across northern Bangladesh brace for what the rains will bring. In Kurigram, one of the country's most flood prone districts, rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Dharla and Teesta regularly burst their banks, leaving roads underwater, homes destroyed and livelihoods swept away.

At Sreepur Village, the same rain looks very different. Behind its walls, children run along covered walkways between buildings, stretch their hands out to catch the raindrops, and play safely on solid, well drained ground, all within sight of the buildings that keep them warm and dry at night. Where flooding elsewhere means fear and disruption, here it is simply part of a safe, settled life.

One of our mothers came to Sreepur Village from a district where the monsoon meant something very different. "During the rainy season, my village is often flooded, and our roads and homes go underwater, making life very difficult," she says. "Since coming to Sreepur Village, I am safe here and no longer have to suffer because of the floods and rains."

For the mothers and children who call Sreepur Village home, the monsoon no longer means fear and uncertainty. It means dry beds, solid roofs, safe places to play and the knowledge that whatever the weather brings, they are safe.

When rain waters threaten homes across Bangladesh, Sreepur Village offers vulnerable mothers and children a safe place to stay, heal and begin again. When everything else is underwater, hope still has a home.
